BETWEEN THE COVERS

About the book

Policarpo Quaresma believes Brazil can fulfil every promise he has found in its history, language and land. His devotion leads him from the study of Tupi and popular music to farming and politics, where his ideals meet indifference, corruption and violence. First published as a book in 1915, Lima Barreto’s novel follows the cost of loving an imagined country. This English translation contains all fifteen chapters in three parts. Prepared with AI assistance and bilingual revision; final literary proofreading remains pending.
