Public
A fondness from a distance
I like to see you on a daily basis,
Through the life you put on display.
I like to know you're happy,
Not knowing if you're actually happy.
I like listening to you without you telling me,
To know you for what you tell others.
I like to think you're okay:
It's my consolation and encouragement.
It pleases me to feel your feelings
Condensing into something more controllable.
Even if, to me, the eternal remains
Illusion and dagger of the "what if".
I like to pet you from afar
– caresses that, I know, you don't feel anymore.
I like to pretend you're mine
As far as I know I'm yours.
It's just poems, I know. They talk to themselves.
With all the people who read them.
They're not yours, they're not mine or anyone's.
They're just what they can be.
I like to feel that life is rhyme
Perfect for what holds us the future;
But I know that neither the metric nor the semantics,
Nor does your heart allow me this illusion.
But not so much, I'm sadder; I like it.
To imagine I'm happy, and sometimes I can:
Be it in memory of a voice breaking the sun,
Be it the plans I still have here, kept.
I like to close my eyes, and believe,
For a moment, you're here.
Even if I can't dream anymore:
I like you.
