The Aleph
I
I've reached the extreme limits of the universe;
To an unattainable place until then
To that point in space, where all Creation
It was seen before my eyes.
I've seen so much that it would never fit in verse:
I felt tiny, insignificant; so
Small before the Whole, a tiny dot immersed
In the Infinite, and amid that, in solitude.
And then I realized I wasn't alone:
Part of the whole, which covered everything:
A sea, a planet, a sun, an insect;
And that it was important to God’s work
For without that point that I knew was “I”,
The whole rest of the universe would be incomplete.
II
I've been walking, like a praying man.
An old litany; and I didn't even give myself
That the road had ended; long ago, I saw it
He had perished; he was gone.
I was in the abyss where you live.
The end of everything; happy and alone, I stopped:
I have nothing but the turn; I go away
Or to have my end there also; I do not know.
I've reached where no one, once,
He had come; no saint, no king;
It was I who saw the dawn most closely,
And only then, my God, did I touch myself
That reaching him was nothing at that time,
And the treading was priceless; and then I returned.
