The fable of the ropes
- Answer me, violin, where you're playing,
So, like this, leaving us speechless?
My poor viola, I'll climb the altar
And I will be the center, and I will be the spalla!
- But, say, violin: what will you play
To cheer up this sad morning?
And I'll play Mozart, and I'll play Liszt!
And I'm gonna be Vivaldi's pussy, so much.
That he will entrust his spring to me;
And I will awaken to the world such a charm,
That there will be songs like never before.
But you, my sister, if it comforts you,
You will never be spalla in this life;
♪ You won't ever have it ♪
No phrase, no stage where you can play it.
Whereas you, my simple cello,
You will never know what it is to be ahead;
Neither that which is pure, nor that which is beautiful,
And they won't miss you if you're away.
But I will always have the gates open
♪ And I'll take it from all the claps ♪
And I'll lend my name to concerts
And I'll play solo, and I'll touch souls.
For what arrogance there is in your treble!
My graves would never like to be;
Squeaky voice! I wish you were dumb!
You know how proud I am to be Cello!
–
It's your lame timbre, it's tiring and it's bothering:
My voice is a velvet, and like the cello,
I too am proud to be a viola!
Now go, come on! Go play your Bach!
Blow your ropes, my dear boy!
For without our help, no one will hear
The weak and lame sound of a cheap violin!
