Taking advantage of the fact that we are in the month of terror, I come here to spread my short story "The House of Mars", available in Fantastic Literature Magazine Vol. 28!

Follows the beginning of the tale for tasting:

THE MARTE HOUSE

Little Damiana didn't dream, but every time she closed her eyes, with a notebook open under her multicolored pen, she drew the things she saw. They were very strange things that didn't belong to this world, like huge libraries, whose shelves went round spiral corridors that had no end. They ascended toward a ceiling of light, while beneath there was no floor, but an abyss of darkness.

There was a time when he gathered all his courage and went down there. The shelves, deep down, were not of metal and wood, but of bones. The books were made of flesh and blood vessels.

He caught one of them, whose cover brought the image of a snake made up of veins and arteries. That snake pulsed like a heart.

Damiana reopened her eyes. It was impossible to perfectly portray what he saw, but there was a drawing, in red, that represented minimally what he had witnessed.

His Violant grandmother was perhaps a spiritual or genetic influence – or perhaps both – that explained his nature. She was an Italian woman who did not agree with the stereotype, because she spoke softly, was patient and almost did not gestulate. But like every grandmother, I loved telling stories to her granddaughter. Put her on her lap and talk about her ancestors. Born in Benevento, in the south of the boot, he was not ashamed to belong to a family of witches. The local tradition said that there, under an ancient oak tree, lived a serpent who was venerated as a guardian spirit. They gathered around that tree, therefore, to seek refuge, guidance, protection, fertility in spring and leniency in winter, among other things.

She denied being a witch herself. But he had a huge collection of books on the subject.

When the old Violante left, Damiana's parents did not show much respect for her memory and shoved all those volumes into boxes that they delivered to a sebum. Your father did not seem to have inherited a drop of the blood of the witches of Benevento. On the contrary, I thought that was tremendous nonsense. Maybe because he was a man. Although your mother was a woman and was afraid. Maybe it wasn't blood.

However, Damiana had saved one who had drawn her attention.

His title was The House of Mars. The introduction explained that it was a grimoire, that is, a spell book. I remember a lot what I'd seen with my eyes closed. It wasn't flesh, but it was red, with a serpent that bit a ruble, and described several spirits belonging to the sphere of the planet Mars. In fact, it dealt with evocations of Martian spirits, whose descriptions and functions were fascinating, with their names always beginning with beautifully decorated capitular letters, alluding to their aspects.

Bartzabel, regarded as the great planetary spirit, was the most prominent of all. The letter B that started his name had a two-point tail, while the top of the letter was a snakehead.

The illustration of the spirit itself was that of a red angel with a serpent’s face. Damiana had closed her eyelids and the drawing had taken a concrete form before her, with wings of flesh in which eyes opened whose iris were fire, involving pupils who reflected her as an adult woman. She knew how to be herself, but ten years older.

I closed the book. He had lacked the courage to give it to his father, who would have scolded him. I just didn't want to throw it away, either.

He had just kept it, hiding it in one of the drawers of the room, under his shirts (...)

The octopus stretched for thousands of miles, inhabited by people by millions, with highways, streets and railways through their tentacles. In the suction cups, there was a faster public transport, a bullet train going inside, coming out of another suction cup. In the head were buildings and houses, offices, theatres, shopping malls, cinemas and nightclubs. Everything seemed to be going great! However, in the rainy season, the sea overflowed and the beast awakened from its long sleep, stirring its tentacles, destroying the roads, breaking down residences and trades and flooding its suction cups, causing at each time hundreds of drowned and buried. The trains were soaked and some rusted. It was necessary to wait for the end of the storm when the giant went back to sleep, so that the survivors would begin reconstruction.

In the dry season, the heat was so strong that the waters below evaporated and the octopus spread over the sand, letting the dust rise. They had to build filters and tiles, which still didn't do much good. Worst of all, during a prolonged period of drought, the great clam died.

Many celebrated, inconsequential and naive, because they believed that after all there would be tranquility with the return of the waters, but the dead octopus could not resist when they arrived.

It was therefore swallowed up by the flood, along with those who parasitized it.
