Henry David Thoreau was an American writer, essayist, philosopher, naturalist, teacher and surveyor associated with the transcendentalist circle of Concord, Massachusetts. A Harvard graduate, he lived from 1845 to 1847 in a small house he built beside Walden Pond, an experience that became the foundation of Walden. His writing joins close observation of nature, philosophical inquiry and social criticism, while his extensive journals record seasons, landscapes, reading and reflections on freedom, conscience and deliberate living. Thoreau was also an active abolitionist: he opposed the Fugitive Slave Law, helped people escaping slavery and publicly defended John Brown. His best-known works include Walden, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, Civil Disobedience, Walking, The Maine Woods and Cape Cod.
