I'm a person who's afraid of a dentist. Even the drill noise, right out of my mouth, already makes my teeth hurt. While I'm in the waiting room, I get restless, I don't go through magazines, I don't take a glass of water, and every time I hear that noise, I almost leave. Sometimes I have. It's psychological, there's no explanation.
When I finally get called in, first I pretend I didn't hear it, but the second or third time I can't pretend anymore, I have to go. Before I sit in the chair, I pull everything that is kind of subject, praise the decoration, ask for the family etc, until the dentist almost pushes me in the chair and says: “- So let’s go, huh?”
As soon as I sit down, my body starts to get all stiff, a chill goes through my spine and all the hairs in my body get goose bumps. But that's when the backrest goes down and the chair goes up that the hands lock in her arms and the sweat starts to flow, looking like I just got out of the shower and I haven't dried myself yet.
It was then that the question arose that changed everything:
- What? What do you want to watch?
- What? What do you mean?
- What? On TV, while we do your treatment.
- What TV?
- The one on the ceiling.
- Do you have a TV on the ceiling?
- Yeah, now every dentist's office has it.
- What? It's been so long since I've been in a dentist's office, I don't even know.
- What? So, what do you want to watch?
- Nothing. Nothing at all. Thank you.
Ready! Now I had a new fear: the fear of the TV falling on me. I tried to look natural while we were talking, but I don't know if I could disguise it. I think the more we try, the more we end up demonstrating.
From that moment on, I could no longer think or see anything but TV. It was like I was in a totally empty room where I was the only one lying in the chair, and the TV, on the ceiling, ready to fall. Sometimes it felt like she was swinging around, like a person threatening to punch me.
One voice said: “All right, it’s over!”. It was the dentist. He had already finished my treatment and I hadn't noticed. I didn't feel anything. I didn't hear anything. Or the drill!
